OK, a few questions for you people.

For those of you who have tattoos: What is it, and where on your body is it? What made you decide to get one? Did it hurt when you got it? Do you ever regret getting it?

To those who don't have them. Have you thought about getting one? What would it be, and where would you put it? What are your pros and cons for and against getting one?

So, I'll start. I don't have one. If I got one, it would eitehr be of a cross, or a cat, and I have absolutely no idea where I'd put it. I haven't done it yet because I'm scared of needles, and afraid it would hurt like hell. But it would be fun, and nice to always carry with me a symbol that is important to me.

So, let's here it for your ink drawings, or fantasy ink drawings.

I have the vampire gargoyle, on my upper right arm, from a postcard advertising Bram Stoker's Dracula. I just felt like it as I adore vampires. And no it wasn't as sore as having my lip pierced.

I also have 1 of Nosferatu on my left shoulder it's very well done and beautifully detailed

I don't have one, but I've been toying with the idea for a while now. I've thought about getting some sort of tribal pattern armband around my upper arm.

I have 5 tattoos. My first I got on my right calf when I was 18, a butterfly. I got it because it was my way of showing I had evolved. I have donkey (from Shrek) on my left shoulder blade to signify me; I'm loud, sing all the time, never shut up, and tend to be annoying at times, Bear paw on the back of my neck cause my last name means bear. My two recent tats are on my wrists; my right wrist is the sign for Cancer to signify my son (my right hand man), my left wrist is the sign for Pisces to signify my daughters and myself since we are fish. My next tat is a full back piece of a grizzly bear on his hind legs (standing up and growling) with huge black hawk wings. That one will signify one message, "Don't fuck with the bear!" Meaning me.. that and I gotta have someone watching my back. None of them hurt but then again I have a huge tolerance for pain. I don't regret any of my tats cause they all have a meaning.

Post 8 by CrazyMusician (If I don't post to your topic, it's cuz I don't give a rip about it!) on Monday, 01-Jan-2007 23:03:33

I don't have a tattoo... thought about getting one once. If I would ever get one, it'd be some music notes or something.
I haven't gotten one because I am afraid of the pain... and afraidt hat it'd be done wrong and I'd be out oodles of money for a shoddy job...
And I'm afraid f the permanence. As much as music is a part of my life... it might not define me in ten years as it does now... it's a stupid reason, just let me have it, okay?
Ciao,
Kate

Like the poster above me, I'm scared of the pain and wonder if I will regret getting one and spending that money for something that may either not turn out how I wanted it or that I may not want or would want to change after a time. However, I've honestly never thought of getting one, just hearing that it is/can be painful and knowing that needdles are used. So no thanks. *smile*

No tattoos for me! I am like Kate...I don't want something permanent on my person that in 10 years might not mean so much.

I have one tattoo. It's my older sister as an angel. It means a great deal to me, as she died a few years ago... This was my little way to carry her with me. It's on my right leg. It's rather large and detailed. Painwise, hmm, I don't know. It hurt, yeah, but it was kind of a freeing/cleansing experience for me. I remember feeling like the physical pain i was feeling right then was taking away from the emotional pain I'd felt since my sister died. as the artist wiped drops of blood away as he worked, I almost felt like he was lifting a weight off my shoulders.

Which, reading over it all, sounds kind of ridiculous. But that's how it is...

I don't know if I'd get another tattoo. This one has such a personal meaning, I don't think I could ever top it. And as for regretting it... I don't think I'll ever regret it.

Hi, all. These are interesting. I knew there would be stories that went along with tattoos.

Tnydancer, those tattoos sound neat. I like your reason for getting them. Tunedtochords, your post did not look ridiculous at all. Art like that often has a very personal meaning. That's why I'd consider getting a kitty tattoo, that looks like my Shadow.

I think one of the most interesting tattoos I've heard of was this. My friend Keisha had a full back tatoo, of angel wings. They were very intricate, you could see the individual feathers, in lots of varying colors. It took the artist a long time to make, but I guess Keisha has gotten a lot of compliments about it. My friend Ryan also keep saying that he intends to get a tattoo of a huge lightning bolt on his left buttock. Now that would be interesting. LOL.

I wonder if tatoos could ever be done in such a way that we, as blind people, could feel them. Maybe using raised ink or something. My two big reasons for not getting a tat is that I don't particularily like needles and that I wouldn't want to decorate my body with something that I couldn't personally look at and enjoy. If tatoos could be made tactile, this would eliminate reason number 2. I acknowledge that tactile graphics may be a bit tough, but braille letters shouldn't be that hard. I'm not sure what phrase I would get though. Maybe the words zonebbs rules! *laugh*

When you first get the tattoo, when it's in the process of healing, it's raised. I could feel the angel's wings and her head. However, after it heals and the dead skin flakes away, you can't feel the design anymore. I actually forget that I have a tattoo sometimes, until I'm wearing a skirt or something and someone comments on it. Ha.

I know I couldn't appreciate the visual aspect, but even the knowing the tattoo is there would mean something. Like if I got one of Shadow, it would be like having him with me. Or a cross, it'd be a constant reminder of who and what I am. So, I don't think I need to be able to see it.

No TunedToChords, the post was not ridiculous. I don't have any tattoos and have 3 tattooed sisters who tease me that I'm chicken, and if they can pop out babies, what's a needle? For me, it's more about the visual aspect. I kind of like the adrenaline and focus of piercings and making sure they heal properly, so the pain would be manageable. I'm just afraid that something would go wrong and no one would tell me. Or, people would tell me and I'd be stuck with badly done art on my body. I would get one tattoo though. If my sisters all agreed, I would absolutely go for a sister bonding, memorial tattoo for my mom, ceremony. We lost her 7 years ago at the end of this month, so it's something I always think about around important anniversary and holiday dates. I'd like something like a butterfly, angel or bird to signify flight and freedom of spirit, but beyond that, I don't know.
Yes. Memorial tattoos are good.
